The first theme of the course Theory and
method for media technology was end in last week and I had learnt a lot of
during last week. I think the course is very interesting whatever is the
lecture or seminar and the most interesting thing is the seminar that we
discussed and shared our own ideas with other students. In fact I was a little doubt
for why should we have to learn the philosophy before the course start, but now
I think it is necessary cause the idea and theories we learnt from this course
will give a great helpful for my next study.
After the lecture, seminar makes I have a
more clearly understanding of what Kant and Plato’s opinion for what is knowledge and how could we perceive the world. In Kant’s
opinion, we perceive the world through form
of intuition (space and time) and twelve categories, our ‘filter’ interact it through what we observed in
the surrounding environments. Kant also gives the worlds own form which is:
perception without conception is blind, conception without perception is empty.
In my point of view, it is conception that form our recognition and think by
itself automatically. On the contrary,
perception is what we perceive from outside objects. Vision transform into perception when the lights of objects
reflect to our eyes. If we lose the conception , we can only see “bodies” from
outside but we can not form an
cognition. In this way, perception will depressed into useless. That is why we
call “perception without conception is blind”. Meanwhile, If we can not
perceive from the out side, we have no idea of what we’ve already observed. Our
conception can not form an recognition because there is nothing can be based
on. That is why “ conception without perception is empty”. Also, in the last
seminar ,we are mainly talked about what the meaning of this, we assume that a
child did not have a soul (it means knowledge or conception in this) when he
was born and therefore, he is blind. But he will get the soul via his growing
up and clash the outside objects he observed. As my opinion, even a newborn
child will have a soul but the soul is in a deep sleep and it will wake up
slowly when it meet other souls and make a reflection of the stimulus from
those souls. We also talked about what will happened if a child growing up without
any parenting or contact with any culture. The answer of our is we all believe
that he will survive but he will have a completely different view of perceiving
the world and living in a different life. The reason for that is just reflect what
Kant said the baby just follow the role to perceive the world through form of
intuition and categories. That is similar like Plato’s idea which is we do not see and hear "with"
the eyes and the ears, but "through" the eyes and the ears.
Different people will have different view with same objects because they have
different conceptions. In other word, the perception of the world will only
depending on ourselves.
I must admit that you have understood both Kant and Plato's arguments quite well. You pre seminar reflection is as good as the post seminar writing. When it comes to a priori and a posteriori knowledge, I think you have explained it quite succinctly. You have covered pretty much all the important issues in those reading.
ReplyDeleteI can clearly see the picture when you were explaining that “without conception we can only see bodies” . very detailed in explaining kant’s word “perception without conception is blind, conception without perception is empty” and interesting discussion about the baby.
ReplyDeleteI understood your explanation of perception but I want to clarify one detail. You wrote: "if you lose the conception , we can only see “bodies” from outside". How is it possible to loose the conception? Do you mean that already gained and structured conception can disappear in our mind? Also, interesting part about baby. I was attending different seminar group, so I would like to know how baby get these 12 categories if we assume that he gains these 12 categories in order to get knowledge?
ReplyDeleteHey, thank you so much for your comment at first, but I am not sure what you pointing is for the baby, you mean the baby growing up without any parenting or contact with any culture? If it is, I could say that is just what I wrote in the end of post, the baby can also get categories by perceiving(his observing, feeling, and thinking) his surrounding environment, but maybe get different definition of categories cause he is living in a different world. I am sorry I forgot what the teacher said in the end of our groups seminar, but one thing I am sure that is ours life is just ours life.

DeleteWe form our conception after getting information from outsde.Obviously we can"loose our conception",just thinking nothing. Also,Indeed,he just made an assumption on this sentence and explain these two words' relationship.
DeleteNo matter "cognition","conception" or "faculty and caregories",we can make assumption on them all."
Hi, Haisheng Yu. Thank you for a well done explanation. I think that now I understand. We can say that baby gets these 12 categories from his/her environment and it is influenced by the context around him/her.

ReplyDeleteYour post is very good because it makes the link between key concepts that we talked about during the lecture and seminar. You really well explained the interaction between perception and conception, which show how humans can catch the world and understand it. You took the example of a child and you succeeded to apply the statement previously discussed in it. I’m not sure that the child’s soul is at first in a deep sleep even if it is just a way to see things. As Kant said, we have forms of intuition in our mind which are intuitive like space or time, and I think that a child in their childhood would be stimulated by his/her environment and in that way, concepts would be created in his/her mind. But, I agree it is subjective!
ReplyDeleteBut it is really a good job! Thank you for sharing!
Hello!
ReplyDeleteGood job, I think you've learned a lot from this week (haven't we all).
I think you picked out the most important and interesting parts from the theme. I like that you explained the quote "perception without conception is blind, conception without perception is empty".
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you changed your mind considering the philosophy part of this course.
You managed to summarized the key concepts of Kant's Critique of pure reason really good. It was interesting to read your thoughts of the "soul" and whether babies have souls when they are born. I understand that many student were in the seminar where you talked about infants and what type of concepts they would have if they didn't have any contact with other people. An experiment was conducted of infants in the 13th century to se what language they would speak if no one spoke to them. They died of the lack of stimuli.
