Theme 6 - Reflection

By this week’s seminar makes me have a new review of what is qualitative and what is case study. Through the discussion I noticed that how to determine a method is qualitative or quantitative is not depend on the numbers of participants in that research, but decide by the type of data your collected. Qualitative methods sometimes also need data supports for their findings in some specific fields. For thus, you couldn’t say that a research with a lot of data collecting is a quantitative method. As I think a qualitative method needs more data if you want to further in-depth with your study. The more details you want to dig, the more amount of data information are required. A good qualitative method could not without a quantitative method for data support.

The more thing we discussed is the case study, what is case study and how can you determined it is a case study in a research. A case study could contains many research categories(quantitative, qualitative, and others…), it aims to put forward some new theories from new fields with the support of previously researches, theories and findings from the results. I think the example from llias that “a person suffering with a very rare disease “ can express what is case study in an easier way. For example, when the SARS just appeared, we do not have any knowing for that. The sick person was isolated and be tested with different experiments, the researchers observing the person’s symptoms and collecting data with different research methods to analyze with the support with many existing theories in order to indicate this case and find a way to cure the disease. This is a typical case study example and determined a new field than before. Sometimes I don’t think a case study must to point out some new theories, the most important aims is to find out new stuffs from unknown research areas. One more point need to be attention that the bound of case study compare with quantitative and qualitative method sometimes are fuzzy, it is easily lead you into a wrong way to get a start. I noticed that I choose a wrong paper for case study in pre post which is more likely a quantitative research rather than a case study. But now after the seminar, I think I had more understanding for that.


I think during this week , my biggest achievement is gathering the knowledge of case study which will play an important role for my future study. And I think make a review of previous knowledge can always give your new feelings, I also learned more new concepts of qualitative method than before.

Theme 5 - Reflection

There have two lectures in this week to talk about how to design research. The first lecture provided by professor Haibo Li on Wednesday, in the lecture professor Haibo Li was mainly talked about the process of problem solving. How to define a problem and how to solve the problem? In order to underline this process, Haibo Li gave an example of “hungry bear” which I think gave a clearly description for that. At first, when two people meet a hungry bear the first things comes up to their mind is run out of the bear as fast as possible, however human can never outran a bear.  So how to survive from a bear? Then the problem now is defined by yourself and all you need to do is just run out of the problem. Sometimes when you confused with the problem you met, just changing the view of the points you treat the problem maybe you will get more useful solutions. Related to this case you realized that, in order to survive, you should not outrun of the bear, you should just outrun the other one. The professor put forward his theory for problem solving process that defining a problem can occupied 90 percent of you time and solving a problem will just spent 10 percent time.

The second important part in this lecture I think is that how to filter ideas. You should know how to select and validate the useful idea from many of them. It not seems like easy cause sometime we are blind, we just want to see what we want, besides the idea maybe not the suitable one for you.  Professor Li mentioned different tools to filter ideas which are real world channel model, tunnel vision and high dimensional space. He also advice us to make a balance consider if the solution address the pain point of the problem or can we use our own existing knowledge and technology to solve it. With my personal opinions, the most important thing is to know who you are and what you can. Filtering ideas based on you own circumstances and effective use of the tools surrounding yourself, and choose the most conducive way to you can directly and faster to reach you goals. To validate a good idea, it would be better to make a proof of concept to check if the solution have feasibility can help to solve problem. When you want to evaluate an idea, the best way is to make a prototype. Thus, your idea could be tested in many times and you could find somewhere new ideas to make progress of you old one.


The second lecture provided by Anders Lundström, which mainly talked about what is prototype and how to use it in design research. I could say that I am not have a good understanding for this lecture, unfortunately there have no seminar in this week, I can not get more details for that, however I still can read others reflection post and to fetch up what I missed in this lecture. As I think, use prototype can help us gain a new knowledge. The purpose of research is finding an answer, solving a problem, testing theory. We design research to shape the prototype by gathering existing empirical data, and the prototype itself doesn’t to be a solution. But it could be continuously updated via gathering data or as a base for other experiments be tested again and again. That are all what I could say in the second lecture, I hope I could get more information from others posts..

Theme6 - Pre study

Select a media technology research paper that is using qualitative methods. The paper should have been published in a high quality journal, with an “impact factor” of 1.0 or above.

The paper I select is Joseph B. Walther, Jeong-woo Jang, "Communication Processes in Participatory Websites" Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication Volume 18, Issue 1, October 2012 (pages 2–15)

1.    Which qualitative method or methods are used in the paper? Which are the benefits and limitations of using these methods?
This paper is a content analysis based on a qualitative method. It has defined four common message type in participatory websites which are proprietor content, user-generated content, deliberate aggregate user representations, and incidental aggregate user representations, the authors gave a detailed instruction for each type and provided research examples for that message types to illustrate the function and influence the played in transforming online social interaction. The authors also gave six empirical studies to analysis what theories, functions and message types they focus on.
    By using this way, I think I have a depth understanding for the concepts the authors offered in this article how did they influence and make a progress in Web2.0 or social web sites. However they don’t have some interactions for those progress to feedback users feeling when they use these social networking sites, it will makes the research lack of accuracy without data supports.

2.    What did you learn about qualitative methods from reading the paper?
By following and analyzing the author’s descriptions in this article, I noticed that qualitative methods research objects with different ways than quantitative method. The qualitative method in this article is a pure qualitative research, the main aspects of qualitative research based on theoretical and empirical; following generally accepted axioms, logic and historical to describe and analysis the research object. However it is lack of quantitative analysis, the result is often a general conclusion.

3.    Which are the main methodological problems of the study? How could the use of the qualitative method or methods have been improved?
This article used a pure qualitative research to investigate communication processes in participatory websites, however, it is not have any data analysis that can ensure the accuracy of author’s study results. As my opinion, the qualitative method is the base and guidelines of quantitative method, maybe the author could add some interaction to collect feedback on their research, thus the accuracy could be ensured for their study.

Select a media technology research paper that is using the case study research method. The paper should have been published in a high quality journal, with an “impact factor” of 1.0 or above

The paper I select is Nicole B. Ellison et al (2007) The Benefits of Facebook “Friends:” Social Capital and College Students’. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. Volume 12, Issue 4, July 2007, Pages: 1143–1168 which I think is a typical case study.

1.    Briefly explain to a first year university student what a case study is.
A case study involves an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a subject. It is a research strategy which “focuses on understanding the dynamics present within single settings”. Case studies combine data collection methods such as “archives, interviews, questionnaires, and observations”. Case study research should not be confused with qualitative research, it can based on any mix of quantitative and qualitative data. The case study can also be used to provide description, test theory or generate theory.

2.    Use the "Process of Building Theory from Case Study Research" (Eisenhardt, summarized in Table 1) to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your selected paper.
It seems that the paper I choose in this part is strictly in accordance with the form provided by table 1 in the paper of building theories from case study research. Starting with a clearly research purpose for the benefits of using facebook can taken. Put forward the hypothesis with case study of previous literatures, by using qualitative and quantitative method combined a tailored survey to collect data and analysis make the results of social capital items shows more detailed. The conclusion established on empirical data analysis that gave a strong demonstrate that a robust connection between Facebook usage and indicators of social capital.
   However, it is not good enough for the design part, limitations to this study that they just examined only one community and can not to generalize the findings in this paper to other kinds of communities or social network tools. The questionnaire is a one-time survey and can not used to establish causality. They also didn’t have a related analysis for the enfolding literature part in their end.

Theme 4 - Reflection

 The theme in this week is mainly talked about quantitative methods and few qualitative methods for what is it and how to use it in our research. After done the courses in this week I felt that it is not difficult to understand than previous topics.  It is not has so many philosophy concepts that can occupied a lot of you time to understand them. I could say that since I have already had a fundamental understanding of these methods and also used them in my Bachelor thesis, I really did not think that I will obtained more knowledge from this week’s study before the courses start. Surprisingly, after the lecture and seminar I found that some of the concepts I learnt from the course gave me a new overview for the methods I understood before. Some of the concepts even gave me a good advice for my project from other course.

The most useful things I learnt from this week is how to design a questionnaire, a questionnaire is a simple and effective way can collect large of data in a short time period. We can control what type of data we want to obtain by designing questions related to our research purposes. When designing a questionnaire you should be sure that your questions can bring the exact information your desired. You should avoid ambiguity or knowledge questions cause you can not expect that all of the participants had more or less pre understanding for you research subject. Unless it is a Basic knowledge. You also need to pay attention that avoid given a “leading” question or any suggestibility that cause the participants followed you mind without the real thought they want to present.

It is also very important to test the questionnaire you designed before it could be considered “valid”. Is it contains everything you want to research? Does the question is difficult to understand which may make mistakes for respondents?  Was the layout of the questionnaire clear or can mobilize respondents enthusiasm?  A good questionnaire means that it be tested numerous and it does indeed answer the question that it was designed to answer. Perhaps, sometimes required to design many questionnaires with the same purpose but for different survey groups(e.g.  youth or old people). I think the knowledge I learnt from this course will give a great support for my project with other course in this period. I also need to design a questionnaire to assistance my subject but some problems confused me because I was not design it before. At now, I think I know how to solve them in a suitable manner.

In the seminar for our groups discussion, we are mainly talked about the benefits and the limitations for quantitative and qualitative methods, and how to use them in our research. We shared our previous papers and discussed why should we use the method in there. In the end we reached a consensus that how could we choice the methods we used in research is based on the different situations. In general, the quantitative methods provide an authenticity and systematic structure makes the results clearly and easily to start a statistics. However, when you need to obtain more detailed information or understanding in some specific field, the qualitative method shows more priority than quantitative method.

Theme5 pre-study

For the lecture on Wednesday,

1.    How can media technologies be evaluated?
The media technologies should be evaluated based on its usability, which is defined as the effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction according to  Réhman, S ect. research. The effectiveness of  a media technology is about whether it can accomplished a special task in a specified system, also depend on the ratio of success to failure in that task. The efficiency of the media technology is the effect required in order to accomplish the task, the evaluation criteria is depending on how much effort it have in current task, the fewer effort be used, the better media technology be evaluated. The satisfaction of      media technology is refer to the comfort and acceptability of this media according to user’s feedback. This is usually an important indicator used to change and improvement that media system.

2.    What role will prototypes play in research?
Prototypes is a production of an original idea which established based on some immature theories. It plays an important role since prototype give researcher a clearly and easier way for look back the progress you designed, and helpful to reconsider what you need to ameliorate in the future works in order to approach the ultimate goal that you expected. A new technology may be proposed according to it’s prototype.

3.    Why could it be necessary to develop a proof of concept prototype?
A proof of concept prototype is necessary since we could connect the function of this technology we researched to the already exists technology and theories in order to test its feasible. Like what I expressed in the previously study that since we are human being, we even unsure if the world we perceived is the real world it has, so we also can not sure if the concept prototype we designed(or a new theory and related production) is right or not. If we cling to a bad design of concept prototype, not only time and funds be consumed but also will lead to misled and generate biased.

4.    What are characteristics and limitations of prototypes?
The characteristics of prototypes is like the role they played in research, it provide an opening mind and novel ideas and theoretical in scientific community even some can not become reality with the limitations of current technologies.  The prototypes in a research can also help the readers have an intuitional understanding of the concepts in the research. Researchers can also based on it to bug, improve and fetch up deficiencies of their theories to achieve their goal. They also have some limitations for example the final production could be failed to product based on prototypes. Maybe convey a wrong idea to users and generate misinterprets which are not the real aims for researchers.

5.    How can design research be communicated/presented?

At the beginning of a research we should introduce our goals in this research, what the category of that research and what exactly we want to research in order to improve something or create new things. Then we should related our research to previously study as the basis and arguments. In the next, we should provide our theories and methods used in this research and list how we design the experiment and tests. It’s better to give the prototype to help readers understanding our purposes. A proof of concepts prototype need be given to demonstrate the feasible of our ideas. After that a discussion and conclusion of final results are required in order for future improvement.

For the lecture Friday, with Ylva Fernaeus:
1.    What is the 'empirical data' in these two papers?
   First we should know the” empirical data” is the knowledge we obtained from our senses, it is a posteriori knowledge. In the first paper, the empirical data is tangible interaction, which they found the disparity between computer virtual and human computer interactions in the research, then they make experiments based on this and get founding. The empirical data in the second paper is driving range, they found the relationships between driving range and try to put forward some solutions. The empirical data plays a starting point in both of two papers, on this basis make the researchers with a deep observing and understanding for problems and provide an effective solution.
2.    Can practical design work in itself be considered a 'knowledge contribution'?
   Yes, I think so. Practical design work based on the existing theories and experiments, the production can be a new idea, theory or improve the previously knowledge. It can be considered a  knowledge contribution if it used as a basis or refresh the concepts of knowledge in scientific research.

3.    Are there any differences in design intentions within a research project, compared to design in general?
A design in general is a way we use to give an answer for our research purpose, it can be used in a wide-area. Unless the general meaning, design intention within a research project aims to solve a specific problem or achieve a specific purpose in a specific filed. Which I think is the most different between the two things.

4.     Is research in tech domains such as these ever replicable? How may we account for aspects such as time/historical setting, skills of the designers, available tools, etc? 

   Yes, obviously. Since in tech domains everything is constantly being updated, each things will be found a new concepts and be improved after a research be conducted again with any purposes you expected from previous study.

5.    Are there any important differences with design driven research compared to other research practices?
A design driven research is an empirical observation which is grounded in the user’s reality to give what they need, which isn’t always what they want. If we said the aim of other research is find a way to have a better understanding for the founding’s, a design driven research will spent more time on development and innovative of technologies.
