After six themes six weeks study, the course comes to the end. Like farmers in the autumn harvest crops with smile on their face, I also harvested my owns. What is human, how do we perceive the world, how can we define the things surrounding us, how should we find a problem, and how do we use our wisdom and tools to solve problems, and thus derive new things in order to replace the old one and enter in a higher level. The course opened my eyes and taught the necessary knowledge and skills, it treated my mind to build up a clear structure when I want to design a problem and research some things not only in media technology area but could be used in any field.
The design of the course is very reasonable and interesting, unlike the other courses which the teachers just impart knowledge like a cramming method of teaching, and you just reflected all the things your learned in a test paper, this course could say used a very novel way. Instead of a final exam, the students required to reflect they learned on a public blog for each theme also allowed to discuss and share their thought with others in a seminar lesson which I think could not more useful for us. Through the discussion and blog reading can gain more new thinking and different opinions from others, it will help you to have a depth understanding for your learned with each theme.
For the aim to implement the goal of this course, it begin with some abstract topics which introduced the theories and points of Plato and Kant for what is knowledge and how to perceive the world. I do not attach so much philosophy before, It spent me a lot of time to read the articles and racked my brain trying to understand the kernel concepts. But it is indeed, just like a foundation of the house, the root of a tree. They gave an excellent explanation for what and why but not for results, the reason sometimes is more important than result in scientific research cause it will lead to find new things, and result is not very important in sometimes. For example in Plato’s Theaetetus they talked about knowledge, the knowledge can be broadly divided into a prior knowledge and a posterior knowledge, they spent a huge time to talk about what are they and how to influence us, but not get an answer for the exactly means of knowledge. However, the knowledge is the basic for us to perceive the world, like refers. Kant said we perceive the world through form of intuition(time and space) and twelve categories, we defined meaning for each object we met from the world via those forms. But different people have different viewing when perceiving the same object, that because the time and space to the people are different so their prior and posterior knowledge are also inconsistent. Like the baby example I mentioned in my first reflection, the baby also can surviving and growing up but with a totally different life. Thus, the same object may have different meaning with different people, the definition of the object could be replaced by a new meaning as the time goes on which like the “aura” of the object that Benjamin expressed. Then, since the different perceiving of the world and changing all the time, that caused different cultures and composed of a pluralistic world. Due to the description of Benjamin and Adorno & Horkheimer’s essay let me to think about that the Media technology is the most powerful production which a single changed could significant impact our cognition and the way to perceive the world. For example the invention of printing and the development of photography. That make me very excited cause I am now learning in this industry.
As my personal consider, all the productions of human activities are comes from the ideas, and an idea generate when we perceive the world. To achieve the idea, we need theories or previous experiments to support, we need a plan to set up a series of research to test, and we also need an evaluation criteria and practice feedbacks to judgment the correctness of the production and make an improvement for that. We also need to solve the problems which happened throughout the whole process. So the rest of themes in that course I think they provided just around one kernel topic which is how to achieve an idea.
The first step is to know what is research and what is theory and how could they be used to achieve the idea. In generally, theory provide an explanatory framework for an observation, is a set of propositions that aims to identify (abstracts) objects and their relation to each other. Research is a way of gathering data to make an explanation of theory, it is a theory production somewhat like the relationship between superstructure and substructure, depending on each other and affecting each other.
To make a plan to achieve the goal we need to design a research, when we design a research we need a full consideration to various factors. Professor Haibo Li said the most important in design research is how to design a problem, he gave his theory that design a problem will take more times than solve it. Because human just want to see what they wanted. I could not say that it is wrong but as my thinking, solve a problem is as important as design a problem. We take more times to design a problem is just to make sure it is worth to research and can not lead us go astray and waste time or supplies. However it not means that a good problem will lead to a good solving result, we also need to take more time think about problem solving and only for thus we can get the real things we are looking forward or even reach the unknown area that we never touched before.
There have many methods provided to make a research, two more famous and common methods are quantitative method and qualitative method. They are two different methods and advanced in different research fields. I also learned a strategy called case study which contains two of the methods and could be used in some specific fields to find something interesting to research or get some new things. When we used these methods to design a research we always need to pay more attentions, for example the questionnaire in quantitative method, you should know the questions you ask can really get you want or not, you also need stand on the subjects side to consider does the structure of the paper is clear enough? Does it will arouse subjects interest? Does the answer is short for subjects to answer? etc. We also should distinguish that in what circumstance should be best used with what method, because we could make a confuse in sometime for example the case study and qualitative method, the bounder of them are blurry. In the problem solving process, sometimes not only one way can get the results, however, you should make a choice for that. When you make a choice you should consider your own ability and situation in that time, and choose a way could achieve your aims with the most convenience and effective manner.
That are all I learned, thank you for the wonderful teaching from all teachers, and the helps and different opinions from my classmates, your gave me an unforgettable study journey and a new thinking pattern. The knowledge and skills I learned from that course will give me a great helpful for my future study, thank you all of your!
